Waking Waves.

Hi, I’m Derek. And Waking Waves’ mission is to help people discover, sustainable mind and body wellbeing growth, in their lives, teams and working environments, through mindfulness and compassion centred development.

Why? If we all knew exactly what we wanted, where and how to get there, this world probably wouldn't be a very exciting, diverse or interesting one! I am grateful for the winding paths I followed, the peaks and troughs of the waves I travelled and the many challenges and opportunities encountered along the way.

My life and work has taught me a few valuable things about adapting to change, coping with stress and fatigue and how to positively influence the people around me. But I learned a whole lot more, when I stopped with intention, to bring real awareness and openness to these experiences. Then, making more grounded decisions with the insight gathered.

I sincerely hope I can share the most valuable things I learned with you. And that these supportive strategies, tools and resources, can help those you care for, lead, or work with, too.

Thank you for visiting!

Working with Waking Waves and Derek Hill promises

  • Whether startup, scale-up or household brand, pre or post-pandemic culture, mission driven or purpose forgotten, career break or broken, desk cubicles and fax machines, collaborative spaces and slack overload, Derek has up to the moment experience of the [present and past] challenges we face in our evolving working world.

  • It is easy to forget we share our humanity in common. And what separates us can be bridged through understanding, compassion and connection. Derek works with people and organisations to help make this possible. He is an ‘always learning’ Dad, occasional footballer, lover of nature, writing and living life more presently.

  • It takes courage to learn something new, set a new goal, change career or bring more focus to your work. Setting an intention to invest in yourself, your loved ones, colleagues or teams, is the first step in making this a reality. Derek became an accredited Mindfulness and Compassion teacher, to help others discover, their best intentions too.

  • Derek spent over 20 years in the technology for good, not for profit and commercial sectors, where he built and coached teams, developed partnership programmes, propositions and sustainable growth for household brands and scaling start-ups, including Farewill and JustGiving.

We value and believe in

  • Many valuable things are built on trust and none more so than our best relationships. When the relationship we have with ourselves, our loved ones, colleagues and communities, are honest and transparent, there are few unwelcome surprises, so much to learn and so many great moments to share.

  • Children inspire us with their curiosity and creativity. And it is in that spirit of openness and wonder, that they seem to have all the fun in life! To bring an open mind to new experiences, is one of the most rewarding things we can do for ourselves. If nothing else, it will remind us what is like to be a child. And if we start there, anything is possible.

  • We cannot change the whole world for the better, or solve all problems. At least not overnight! But we can have a heartfelt intention to do good, to genuinely wish to help and support ourselves and others. Leading with compassion first, builds inner strength, deeper understanding, genuine human connection and greater perspective.
